Dust mite allergy in children: understanding, prevention and better daily living
Dust mite allergy is one of the most common respiratory allergies in children. Invisible to the naked eye, the dust mite is a microorganism that naturally lives in household dust. It thrives in warm, humid environments, particularlyin bedding, carpets, and stuffed animals. In some children, contact with these allergens triggers reactions that are sometimes bothersome in daily life.
Why do some children develop allergies?
An allergy is an excessive reaction of the immune system to a normally harmless substance: the allergen. In children allergic to dust mites, their bodies recognize certain dust mite proteins as threats and trigger an inflammatory response.
Several factors increase the risk:
Family historyof allergies or asthma.
Early exposureto dusty or poorly ventilated environments.
Respiratory fragility, especially in babies.
The main symptoms in children
Dust mite allergy can manifest itself in different ways, sometimes subtle:
1. Respiratory symptoms
blocked or constantly runny nose
repeated sneezing, especially upon waking
itchy nose
dry cough
2. The eyes
Red, watery eyes
Itching (allergic conjunctivitis)
3. The skin
atopic eczema aggravated by exposure
4. The bronchi
In some children, allergies contribute to:
asthma attacks
shortness of breath during exertion
wheezing sounds
What can be done to reduce symptoms at home?
Even if dust mites cannot be completely eliminated, several measures can reduce their presence, including enclosing the mattress in a certified anti-dust mite cover registered as class 1 medical equipment.
Choose an anti-dust mite cover that completely encloses the mattress.
All fitted sheets or mattress protectors that are open underneath are completely ineffective. They do absolutely nothing to prevent dust mite waste from spreading throughout the room. In particular, caution should be exercised with polypropylene covers described as "multi-layered"; they are very cheap but should only be recommended as a temporary measure because they lose all effectiveness after a few washes, sometimes even after the first one.
ProtecSom anti-mite covers are exclusively full-coverage envelopes designed to completely cover the mattress.
